Secrets of the woods . Wolf

NEW

"Secrets of the woods . Wolf"
European Grey Wolf . canis lupus lupus
Miniature . Graphite . 5.9 x 5.9 inch

The gray wolf was once the world's most widely distributed mammal, living north of 15N latitude in North America and 12N in Eurasia. Wolves tend to have difficulty adapting to human induced changes, and are often referred to as an indicator species; a species delineating an ecoregion or indicating an environmental condition such as a disease outbreak, pollution, species competition, or climate change. Wolves do not seem to be able to adapt as readily to expanding civilization the way coyotes do. While human expansion has seen an increase in the latter's numbers, it has caused a drop in those of the former

Long-eared owl . asio otus
Graphite & Colored Crayons . 11.8 x 8.3 inch

The Long-eared Owl´s breeding season is from February to July. This bird is partially migratory, moving south in winter from the northern parts of its temperate range. Its habitat is forest close to open country. It nests in trees, often coniferous, using the old stick nests of other birds such as crows, ravens and magpies and various hawks. The average clutch size is 4-6 eggs, and the incubation time averages from 25–30 days. An unusual characteristic of this species is its communal roosting in thickets during the winter months. The young have a characteristic call, likened to a rusty hinge.

Bearing a large bony frill and three horns on its large four-legged body, and conjuring similarities with the modern rhinoceros, Triceratops is one of the most recognizable of all dinosaurs. The Frill-necked Lizard, also known as the Frilled Dragon,

Nursing mummys little break

"Nursing mummys little break"
Red squirrel . Sciurus vulgaris
Watercolor & goldleaf. 8 x 8 inch

In Great Britain and Ireland, numbers have decreased drastically in recent years, in part due to the introduction of the eastern grey squirrel. The red squirrel is protected in most of Europe, as it is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN red list. In some areas it is abundant and is hunted for its fur. Although not thought to be under any threat worldwide,
the red squirrel has drastically reduced in number in the United Kingdom. Fewer than 140,000 individuals
are thought to be left, approximately 85% of which are in Scotland. This population decrease is often
ascribed to the introduction of the eastern grey squirrel from North America, but the loss and
fragmentation of its native woodland habitat has also played a major role.

Facing the dragon

"Facing the dragon"
Winter wren . Troglodytes troglodytes
Watercolor . 20 x 28 inch

According to European folklore, the Wren is the King of the Birds. Long ago
the birds held a contest to see who could fly the highest; at first it
looked as though the Eagle would win easily, but just as the Eagle
began to tire, the Wren, which had hidden under the Eagle's tail
feathers, crept out and soared far above. The wren's majesty
is recognized in such stories as the Grimm Brothers' The
Willow-Wren and the Bear.

Brothers in the maze of moments

"Brothers in the maze of moments"
Brown bears . Ursus arctos arctos
Graphite . 16 x 23 inch

There are about 200.000 brown bears in the world. Its larger populations match the largest extant land carnivores.
In spite of their size, some brown bears have been clocked at speeds in excess of 35 mph. The average litter
number is between one and four, with twins (like the bears shown on this artwork) being the most common number.
Although their inclusion as of "Least concern" on the 2006 IUCN red list of threatended species
refers to their global population, the fact is that local populations are increasingly becoming scarcer.
And as the IUCN itself adds "Least Concern does not always mean that species are not at risk.
There are declinig species that are evaluated as Least Concern". About the motif Daniela
says that "it was a big pleasure watching their game and a great privilege
to share this untroubled moment of their juvenile life".
